02 Jan Natural Plant Dyes with Resist Techniques
My workshops are an invitation to learn the foundations of plant dye alchemy. Plant dyeing is the oldest way of capturing color on textiles and is used among many different cultures. In class, you’ll be able to witness the alchemical beauty of transforming undyed organic fibers into living color pieces. We will discuss and experiment with: mordants, fibers, plants to grow, plants to identify in your back yard, sustainability, sourcing, proper disposal, water, modifiers and resists.
You’ll be guided through a step by step process of natural dyeing using various resist techniques to create texture, design, pattern, variation and allure. Utilizing a rainbow of colors extracted from flowers, trees, bugs, bark, leaves, food waste and minerals. This class will support your journey of walking in color and giving new life to the threads that hold you. All materials included. Each student will experiment and leave with their own hand dyed piece(s).
