Drop Spindle Spinning and Singing: Traditions of Wool, Rhythm & Song
Enter the world of drop spindle spinning, one of the oldest women’s fiber traditions in the world. This class teaches the foundations of spinning wool by hand—drafting, twisting, and building a steady thread that carries the rhythm of generations before us.
Each participant receives a traditional drop spindle and wool to practice with. As we spin, we’ll share “waulking songs” inspired by the celtic tradition of singing while they work the fiber, echoing the communal singing that once paced and softened long hours of labor.
We’ll also explore a short introduction to traditional plant dyes, and how natural pigments brought life and meaning to handspun fibers.
Participants leave with their spindle, their handspun yarn, and a lived experience of spinning as women have practiced and sung through the ages.
Kate Tonnessen and Saoirse Watters will be sharing Drop Spindle Spinning and Singing: Traditions of Wool, Rhythm & Song.
