16 Jan Song-Making for Life Transitions and Sacred Thresholds
This class is an exploration of song as companion through life’s thresholds. Drawing from traditions of birth songs, remembrance songs, and ritual music, participants will be guided to create songs that honor transitions such as birth, motherhood, grief, initiation, a big life change, or becoming.
We’ll begin by grounding into the body and breath, then gently open the voice through toning and intuitive sounding. Through storytelling, reflection, and guided melodic exploration, participants will be invited to listen for a song that wants to emerge for a particular transition in their life: past, present, or future. This may be a song for oneself, for a child, for a loved one, or for a moment of crossing.
Participants will be supported in crafting simple, repeatable melodies that can be remembered and sung again and again. The container will emphasize safety, non-judgement, and reverence, allowing emotion and meaning to arise naturally without pressure. Group witnessing and (optional) sharing will help anchor each song as a living memory held within the community.
What students will learn and walk away with:
• An understanding of song as ritual support during life transitions
• A remembrance that they too are a singer, that singing is our birthright
• A personally meaningful transition or “threshold” song
• Practices for accessing intuitive melody and memory through the voice
• A simple framework for creating and holding song rituals for oneself or others
• A deeper sense of trust in the voice as a keeper of story, grief, and becoming
This class is well-suited for mothers, caregivers, ritualists, birth-workers, and anyone longing to mark change with beauty, presence, and song.
Kate West will be sharing Song-Making for Life Transitions and Sacred Thresholds.
