06 Jan Map and Compass Navigation
Learn essential navigation skills: orienting a map, setting a compass, translating topographical lines to visible landmarks, setting a point, and charting a course.
Delve into earth’s dependence on the invisible forces of magnetism—a current that expands from core to beyond the atmosphere. Find north. Identify features of the surrounding landscape. Examine how the compass transformed from a tool of divination to a tool of conquest—and how mindful navigation shifts the human-earth relationship from one of exploitation to one of respectful interaction and reciprocity.
While outdoor education has become more accessible to women, most navigation education still centers men—and often conquest. But curiosity and awe can guide us into deeper ecological literacy, allowing us to connect more with our nature kin. And this feels like realigning the compass with divinity.
Ayssa Oddi will be teaching Map and Compass Navigation.
