Movement is something that has been a part of my life since I was a child. Growing up I was pushed into sports however I always had a passion for music, art, and free expression. When I entered into my twenties I became interested in yoga however I would always get very anxious about going into a yoga studio because of the color of my skin. I felt as though I did not belong. There were a couple times that I walked into the lobby of a yoga center and turned around to leave because it felt like I was not supposed to be there. When I was 26 years old I finally took my first yoga class at a small yoga studio near my work. The staff was very welcoming when I walked in and made me feel like they were happy to have me there. After my first class I was hooked. I would race from work to the yoga studio to take class. The more that I practiced, the more confident I felt entering other yoga studios to try their classes. I found a studio that I really loved, their classes were physical but also helped me understand myself better as a whole. A few years later I decided to enroll in yoga teacher training to deepen my practice. I had no intention of teaching yoga, I just wanted to keep growing and becoming more whole. During the teacher training we had to practice teach, I was very introverted at the time and dreaded this part. To my and everyone’s surprise teaching came very naturally to me. To this day something inside of me just turns on and lights up when I teach yoga. I love it. I have now been teaching yoga since 2019.
My aim as a yoga instructor is to make everyone feel welcome and successful in their practice. I want to be a familiar and friendly face to people who identify as BIPOC so that they feel empowered to grow in the yoga practice as well. The practice of yoga has changed my life and been my safe space. I have found home and community through the practice of yoga asana. Through various trials, yoga has been a grounding force in my life. I want to share that magic with as many people as possible.
My classes are themed around grounded intentions with the aim to gift students with something they carry take off of their mat and apply to their daily lives. I love to incorporate journaling at the end of my classes and open up the floor for communal discussion.
Cassandra will be sharing Flow with the Sun, Chill with the Moon: Yoga and Journal experience
