Caitlin Deane

Caitlin is a clay artist, earth builder, wilder babe, and desert dweller. After receiving her BFA in Ceramics from MICA in 2012, she left the east coast to pursue the vastness of the southwest and an education in natural building at the California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture (Cal-Earth).

Her discovery of clay and its endless possibilities opened a path for her to develop a reverence towards local and natural materials. Throughout the past five years, Caitlin has completed two long term apprenticeships, created a site-specific sculpture garden, built domes, taught classes on natural building, and developed a new ceramics program at Cal-Earth. The path of sculpting forms with the earth, from the bowl you eat out of to the house you live in, has helped her connect more deeply with the environment around her. Caitlin believes everyone has a right to build their own home, and sees natural building as an essential ingredient to a sustainable life for all.

Caitlin is currently living and working at her home studio near Joshua Tree, CA where she devotes her time growing her ceramics business, Urthen, and continues to work with Cal-Earth developing new programs and classes.

Caitlyn will be sharing Earth Bench Building.
