03 Jan Squirrel to Soup
A hands on workshop / demonstration to go through the step by step process of turning a dead squirrel into a nourishing soup. Part hands on skills & finesse; learning each part of the process in detail from making the first cut, to peeling off the fur, to cleanly taking out the guts and organs, to putting aside the meat with other ingredients for a soup. Part prayer and death doula-ing; honoring the spirit of the animal, giving them offerings, and listening to their medicine. We will be taking it slow to fully honor the spirit of the squirrel, to acknowledge what it may bring up for people, and to receive the wisdom this process invokes. I will also go over practical things such as safety when picking up an animal from the side of the road, how to tell if it’s too far gone, and burying the remains. As well as potentials for what projects and crafts can be made with the fur and how to go about that process. There will be plenty of space for questions and stories along the way!
I find a squirrel to be a great starting point for opening to processing animals, because they are so small it is feasible for anyone to do, even in a tiny apartment. Squirrels are hit by cars all the time, and this is a great way to create something useful from this animal’s death. There is a unique kind of empowerment when you learn a self sufficient skill like this that would actually be helpful in case of an apocalypse 😉 And for our future of living in more direct and intimate connection with the earth and her sustenance.
Squirrel to Soup will be offered by Abigail Hinds who is also offering Holistic Breast Care.
