Radical Thresholds: Rites of Passage

“Radical Thresholds: Rites of Passage as Political & Spiritual Skill-building to Face the Uncertainty of Our Times” will focus on rites of passage and initiation practices, the impact of their absence in our contemporary white-supremacist capitalist settler colonialism culture, and how conscious reclamation of “bare bones” ceremonies that foster an individual’s direct connection to the earth support not only personal growth and sense of belonging but also can serve to build political fortitude for activists, community organizers, and front-lines healers.

This class offers space for students to articulate the threshold moment in which they find themselves in this moment in their lives — be that stepping out of a relationship, getting married, grieving an abortion or a death in their family, or a burned or flooded home, or simply learning to love our ancestors or how to keep one’s heart open in the face of the political situation of our time. Collectively as a circle, we witness and support each person to find their authentic prayer or intention, discover what self-generated ceremony might support that threshold to be crossed, and how each personal prayer is connected to the larger political struggles and need for healing of our collective moment.

Justine Epstein will be sharing “Radical Thresholds: Rites of Passage as Political & Spiritual Skill-building to Face the Uncertainty of Our Times” during Sun Session.
