23 Dec Map & Compass Crash Course
In the age of GPS it is easy for complacency to settle in when it comes to getting from point A to B. Though incredibly useful, GPS is also problematic and much can go wrong when we rely on electronics in the back-country. Beyond that it is incredibly empowering to learn to navigate the “old fashioned” way. So in this class you’ll get a crash course in: the nomenclature of maps; how to use an orienteering compass (the most common type on the market now); how to choose the best of each for various trips; using your steps (paces) to measure rough distances; taking a bearing both from the landscape and from a map; making and using a 6-point checklist for navigating; and practice some simple exercises to help the information stick.
Map & Compass Crash Course will be offered by Jessie Krebs.
