Herbal Compress Massage, Thai traditional healing for women’s health
So often massage is considered a luxury spa service, only indulged in on special occasions, but in many traditional cultures healing touch is sacred. a necessary form of daily nourishment, Traditionally, in Thailand, massage was taught in temples, a meditation of loving kindness between giver and receiver. This healing touch is shared as a regular practice at home between family, friends and loved ones. Central to the heart of the Thai tradition for women is the art of Herbal Compress Massage.
Wild medicinal plants are lovingly wrapped in cotton cloth, steamed until warm and massaged into areas of tension and stagnant energy. This technique is especially useful for hormonal imbalance, deep tension and as a spiritual aid to overcome anxiety. I teach practical hands-on herbal massage skills that are surprisingly easy and effective to share, even after a short workshop.
Chanting together we will focus our minds, open our hearts and create safe sacred space to explore the message. We will see, smell and discuss traditional asian and western herbs useful for hormonal balance and postnatal healing and create our own compress bundles. In pairs women will have the chance to give and receive this healing work together.
We will learn simple herbal steam massage techniques to support women’s health including:
postnatal abdominal healing
easing the symptoms of menopause.
In Thai Ayurveda it is believed that the fire element maintains pregnancy and birth is brought about by wind. Herbal compress massage helps to fill a void that can be left in the belly after birth, replacing anxiety-producing wind with warming fire, earth and water. Mother is deeply nurtured by the practice, her uterus shrinks, afterbirth pains are soothed, the abdominal muscles are toned and separations closed towards the center, any grief stored in her belly is removed, her breasts are gently massaged to increase circulation and loosen any blockages in the ducts. She is left with a feeling of warm fullness and love. Many women find the practice healing even years after giving birth, and it is soothing and fertility enhancing for those who are not yet mothers.
It is my intention that the workshop not only teaches techniques to be shared in the future with friends and sisters but as a nurturing experience of sharing for all involved in the workshop. We finish with a closing the circle to share our experiences together.
(Women should come wearing comfortable clothing or a bathing suit, A top that is easy to lift or remove, that may possibly get wet with warm herbal water.)
