Folk Voices

Folk Voices

All of our ancestors sang. Throughout time and space, songs have marked the happenings of life, told stories of culture, made meaning, woven the days. There is wisdom and beauty to be found in old songs and old ways of singing, flickers of wisdom to glean from bending our minds into new sounds and spaces. In this workshop, you’ll be invited you to stretch your voice into soundscapes originating in another time and place, to find the bright and piercing timbre of the folk voices of the babas who still sit on stoops and gossip with their friends in the village as the shepherds move the herds through the town before nightfall. From Bulgaria to Ukraine, Scotland to Georgia, the stirring and breathtaking polyphonic music of traditional European cultures awakens something worth attending to in anyone who sings these songs. If you’re ready for a challenge and the great reward that comes with learning the complex and elegant music from storied lands, come and join us!
