I am a multidisciplinary artist born in Peru. The early contact with human vestiges and techniques like weaving and embroidering are source of my characteristic kitsch aesthetic. I´m interested in a holistic approach to art and investigate about the traditional thread bonding therapeutic methods with visual elements around the creative process.
My practice focuses in the ritual of time in crafting. My latest research project “Soft Gardens: Landscaping contemporary semiotics in woven textiles” (2017), focused in the study of textile as an archetypical language.
I am currently working on the recovery of traditional techniques while researching about the connection between technology & language. My practice focuses on writing through weaving in the digital era: textiles fuel my passion for research.
On a conceptual level, I am intrigued by the shift towards the digital space that our generation experiences. Textile material experiences shape our culture and host language & communication, fostering a sense of community, of belongness. We cannot warm up with cyberspace yet.
Weaving as meditation is a workshop created to access the space where mind and hand meet. We will go deeper in this space to start weaving codes and patterns, accessing deep states of concentration. Workshop starts with a mini introduction to weaving & pattern making and finishes with a guided meditation.
Alexia Pedal will be sharing Weaving as Meditation.
